I knew someone who bred her dog. Her dog was the most loving and attentive mom but by six weeks, she was done with the babies. She didn’t want them to nurse, didn’t hardly lay with them, etc. I also back up that by the time the pups are ready to go, mama is ready for them to go. that is very true, our lab was from a litter of a family members, they have mom and dad and 2 siblings and it is a little crazy. Ours gets along well but they don’t remember each other!! At least they all have loving homes!! Dogs need people! Puppies only need momma for a short period of time!! I have also wondered that. Nobody had ever addressed the emotions both mom and baby have. Gayle if you ever figureddo up need Hephaestus o would i always wondered that too. emotionally it seems sad for them to be taken away but she knows. i also remember hearing the moms may start to reject the pups not sure if that is true when they get to a certain age it’s better to distance then as they still want to suckle and when mum has got 10 chunky 5 week old pups nipping at her it’s very painful so in that respect it’s better for mum. But contact for 8 weeks is recommended. If the pups wont leave mum alone she can end up with mastitis and ita very sore for her. Mum knows what to do from personal experience I dont think they do. That’s a human emotion. Dogs live in the now. Although for the first 3 weeks or so mum is very emotional and would kill over her puppies. For the first few days mun doesnt even like to go out for the toilet and leave them. But that lessens as the pups get older. Dogs know what to do naturally. They’re not humans remember. And I love dogs more than anyone. I’d put a dog before myself every time.
