Many many years ago, we followed a German speaking tour guide in Innsbruck (museum/castle/cathedral – don’t remember) – she went outside and we assumed we were continuing to another building…. She did keep looking at us in an odd way over her shoulder. Finally realized we had followed her home… This is the first one I read and this is already my favorite. How hilariously embarrassing! I would have been mortified! Great story! We were like “whoops” then we laughed and laughed. To clarify, we knew the tour was not in English when we paid, but we figured whenever she stopped to talk we would read the pamphlet – otherwise, we had no clue what to “appreciate” – we were young! At our first meal in Indonesia, where I lived with two other young ladies, I kept saying “Kamar kechil” to our maid, whose name was Mar, for a lovely dinner. I had at that point learned a few basic words. The words I was intending to say were “Terima kasih” (“thank you”)! Instead, I realized to my horror at the end of the meal that I had been saying “room small” or “bathroom”… Oopsie! When I was in Italy I was trying to make a reservation for a room with a shower (doccia). I got mixed up and used a similar sounding word (dolci). I was asking for a room with dessert. I was trying to impress friend after dinner and ask for the check (“il conto”) but used the wrong word “contorno”, which means “side dish”…the waiter smiled and corrected me quietly to avoid embarrassing me. Always an opportunity to use the wrong word but most appreciate we are trying! Another was made by a friend who was late to catch her train and couldn’t find the station. She used the wrong noun for station and was asking everyone, “Where is the war? Where is the war?”
