This project will enable residents to influence policy decisions, provide training to impacted residents on how to identify and monitor local industrial polluters, liaison residents with the media, public officials and oversight agencies to improve conditions in their neighborhoods, and build capacity of the residents to hold involved parties accountable. The purpose of the Richmond Environmental Justice Community Leadership Project is to build the leadership and capacity of Richmond’s Laotian refugee community to address the immediate and long term environmental justice and public health hazards and risks posed by urban development and land use decisions; and to work with partner organizations in making their efforts more effective. Richmond is currently in the preliminary stages of updating its General Plan. This project is a multifaceted approach to building the capacity of the community to conduct community-based monitoring to address the environmental and public health issues identified in their community.
