David Nicol said it was kind of surreal to look up and see a bear in the backyard of his house near 1st street and E. Franklin Street.
“About 6 o’clock, I come on the deck for my morning cup of coffee and looked up and he’s just wandering through the backyard.,” he said.
Nicol said the bear glanced at him but looked away and kept lumbering through the yard. But he said it was startled by the barking of a dog that, coincidentally, is named ‘Bear’ and the black bear climbed up a tree. Nicol said he took some photos and then went inside to call police and when he came out, the bear was gone.
Missouri Department of Conservation wildlife biologist Tom Meister, said the bear appears to be a juvenile and was probably kicked out of its den by its mother this spring and is looking to find food and establish its own territory. When bears wander into populated area looking for food, he said, they usually stay on the move.
“You know, instead of staying in one place and foraging and hunting for stuff to eat, it keeps getting pushed, you know, around because people are interested in seeing them and that scares them,” he said.
There’ve been several sightings of the bear in the Pacific area. Robin Stout, who lives four miles south of town, told News 4 the bear spent about an hour Monday evening in her front yard eating from a bird feeder and lounging around. The bear sightings are making some Pacific residents a little nervous.
