There is very little reliable data on the status of wolves in the Middle East, living mainly in Israel and Saudi Arabia, although their numbers appear to be stable, and likely remain so. Israel’s conservation policy and effective law enforcement maintain a moderate population of wolves, spread to neighboring countries, while Saudi Arabia has vast desert regions where there are 300–600 live wolves are not disturbed. Wolves exist for most of its history in Saudi Arabia, presumably due to a lack of pastoralism and human waste.
Turkey could play an important role in maintaining wolves in the region, given its contiguity with Central Asia. The mountains of Turkey have served as a refuge for the few remaining wolves in Syria. A small wolf population occurs in the Golan Heights, and is well protected by conservation activities there. The wolves live in the southern Negev desert bordered by populations that live in the Sinai Egypt and Jordan. In the Middle East, this species is only strictly protected in Israel. Elsewhere, it can be hunted year-round by nomadic tribes.
