Head to Merewether Beach in Newcastle, two hours north of Sydney, for the Surfest competition in early March. Launched in 1985 to promote the stunning surfing beaches of Newcastle, where the Surfest Competition has become Australia’s biggest surfing festival. The competition consisted of two World Qualifying Events – 4-star Burton Toyota Pro for men and 1-star Newcastle Open for women. You will also find many other surfing events going on here. More than 10,000 people gathered at Merewether Beach to watch surfers test their skills on the waves of right-hand clapping and the southerly souther waves.
Up to 200 top surfers in the world gather at Surfers Point in Margaret River to take part in the famous Drug Aware Pro in mid-March. It is a fierce battle to win titles.
