Peter Benchley’s novel Jaws and Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster portray the great white shark as a “brutal cannibal”. Humans are not white sharks’ favorite prey, but it is responsible for the largest number of reports and deaths of any shark attack.

The great white shark is one of the many original amphibian species described by Linnaeus in the 10 1758 edition of Systema Naturae, whose first scientific name was Squalus carcharias. Sir Andrew Smith then named it Carcharodon as its generic name in 1833, and also in 1873. The generic name was identified with the specific name of Linnaeus and the current scientific name, Carcharodon carcharias, was finish. Carcharodon comes from the ancient Greek word karcharos, meaning “sharp” or “jagged,” and odous, meaning tooth.
