In 2016, an estimate of global wild tigers with approximately 3,890 individuals was presented during the 3rd Asian Ministers Meeting on Tiger Conservation. The WWF later claimed that the world’s number of wild tigers had increased for the first time in a century.

Major threats to Indochinese tigers include habitat destruction, habitat fragmentation and poaching for feathers and body parts, and have significantly reduced wild tiger populations. In India, only 11% of the habitat of historic tigers is due to habitat fragmentation. The need for tiger parts for use in traditional Chinese medicine is also seen as a major threat to the tiger population. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was estimated that there were more than 100,000 tigers in the wild, but the population has gradually decreased outside captivity from 1,500 to 3,500. Some estimates suggest that there are fewer than 2,500 adult breeders, with no subpopulation containing more than 250 adult individuals. The number of wild tigers globally is estimated by the World Nature Fund to be 3,200 in 2011 and 3,890 in 2015.
