A fill is a departure from the rhythmic pattern of repeating a song. A blank fill is used to “fill” the space between the end of a sentence and the beginning of another sentence or chorus. Fills range from a few simple strokes on tom or snare drumsticks to special rhythms played on hi-hats, to a few long sequences of skillful short drum solos. As well as adding richness and variation to the music, the fill takes on an important function in preparing and pointing out significant changes in the song and associated sections. A vocal cue is a short drum fill that introduces a vocal entry. The ending of a fill with a cymbals on beat one is often used to lead to a chorus or verse.

A drum recital is a play that highlights the drummer’s mastery, skill and musical creativity, while other solos such as guitar solos are often accompanied by other rhythmic instruments (e.g. : Bass Guitar and Electric Guitar), for most drums recitation, all band members stop playing so all the audience’s attention will be on the drummer. In some drum solos, other rhythm musicians may play “hit point” at certain points, sudden, large chord for a short period of time. but they are also used in certain genres of rock, such as heavy metal and progressive rock. During drum recitals, the drummer has a degree of creative freedom that allows them to use complex rhythms that would otherwise not fit into an ensemble. During live concerts, drummers may be offered extensive drum kits, even in genres where drum solo is very rare on singles.
