Mermaids are described as creatures with attractive beauty. Mermaids often float on the surface of the sea and sing to many people and gods. Their voices cause the sailors to be in distress, but sometimes waves bring their voices to the ships to predict impending bad weather.
The Little Mermaid did not completely deceive the sailors from dying, sometimes they saved the shipwrecked sailors’ lives. These sailors will then stay on the island to give birth to females with mermaids and gradually turn into “Mermen” – male mermaids. Because of this, women hated mermaids for seducing their men. Medieval paintings show that mermaids often carry a small hand mirror – something common to prostitutes.
