The real reason that they are called the “Fighting Irish” is in the early 1920s the KKK was going to hold a huge rally in South Bend and the word got out. The KKK isn’t just anti black, but anti Catholic as well. Many of the ND students got word of the rally and that supporters would carry little US flags and headed out to stop the rally before it started. At the time 33% of all white Indiana males were in the KKK. Riots ensued over a 3 day period. With each side claiming some victories. Notre dame fighting irish football crocband crocs shoes. Knute Rockne and the president of the university directed the students to stop. The University was all male at the time and the majority of the students were Irish Catholics. Nationakl writers dubbed the students the “Fighting Irish” in the press. The KKK wrote letters of protest to no avail.
The name stuck and ever since then Notre Dame is known as the “Fighting Irish”. There is much more to the story and a good book written partially titled the University of Notre Dame vs the KKK, avaialable on Amazon etc…WHen the NCAA was considering all the PC mascot changes many complained about Fighting Irish until they learned the origination story.
