On empty streets late at night suddenly appeared a picture of a boy in traditional kimono with a straw hat in his hand holding a plate containing white tofu. Folk call it Tōfu kozō, meaning the tofu boy, the “cute” youkai that roam around, scouting for human life. Ordinary youkai, slave servant to the devil. Tōfu kozō has a reputation for being a monster but has a human-like appearance, a bit adorable because he looks like a child and doesn’t have too much power. It is shaped like a little uncle, but the difference is that the head is larger, the toenails and nails are also longer than the human. Tōfu kozō often wears the clothes of the Edo-era tofu vendor, embroidered with patterns that are supposed to ward off illnesses.
