“I just asked him to go play his game. Focus on each ball and try to put the target and the match situation out of his mind. And I guess he did pretty well.”

“Pretty well?” you ask him in astonishment and Clarke says, “Ok ok, extremelllyyy well…” with a chuckle.

Kyle is the most positive person I’ve met but he’s also extremely humble. And I’m sure this feat will change nothing about him.

It wasn’t the first time Clarke had spent a sleepless night owing to his son. The last time it happened came in lot more distressing circumstances. It was when Mayers was caught in the midst of a dreadful hurricane while on a cricket tour to Dominica in 2017 with the Windward Islands team.

“Oh, that was a scary time,” says Clarke, “We didn’t hear from him for nearly 2 days and then eventually the coast guards or the Barbados police had to get involved in finding Kyle and some others. We didn’t sleep for two nights back then and I still shudder thinking about that period.”

There’s a story from that unfortunate episode that those around him believe says a lot about Mayers as a person. When he turned down an offer to catch a ride back with the coast guard to Barbados to stay back in solidarity with his roommate who was Jamaican.

It was incidentally with another Jamaican, and fellow debutant, Nkrumah Bonner, that he forged the defiant stand-a partnership of 216 which is also now in the record books – which laid the foundation for the biggest run-chase in Asia. Along the way, Mayers also became only the second batsman in history to score a fourth innings double-hundred in a Test win after Gordon Greenidge.

As it turns out, Mayers learnt most of his cricket under the tutelage of Greenidge’s legendary opening partner, being coached by Desmond Haynes at the Desmond Haynes Oval. In Chittagong, he also became only the second player from the Carlton Cricket Club after Haynes to play Test cricket for the West Indies.

Clarke too played all his cricket for the same club and recalls having played a couple of matches alongside his son too. The sport if anything runs through the family with a number of them having played it at different levels. And he reveals that Mayers always looked to have the talent to play for the West Indies.
