Leave a fun, snarky comment toward me, a team or a player and it will likely get picked by Wosny Lambre for our Power Rankings podcast, for subscribers only, which has Wos reading the best comments each week. Or it might even make The Restricted Area, our new NBA show on The Athletic’s YouTube channel.
• Only 15 teams will be deemed worthy of a GIF or video each week. That’s to help cut down on eating up your data and computer’s processor.
• This is supposed to be fun so let’s have fun with it.
The Power Rankings heading into Week 19 of the 2020-21 regular season begin now!
1. LA Clippers (↑Previously 4th), 43-19, +6.7 net rating
Weekly slate: Win at Blazers, Win over Grizzlies, Win at Rockets
Old player to break the Power Rankings curse: Darius Miles
That’s right. Darius Miles. The former LA Clippers forward was one of the most hyped and intriguing players of the early 2000s, and he was extremely fun for the first couple of seasons. The Clippers teams with Miles, Lamar Odom, Quentin Richardson and Corey Maggette made the Clippers cool and fun for the first time in their history. While Odom was the main reason for that, Miles threw a ton of excitement into his brief time in L.A. The knucklehead celebration became iconic, and even though Miles didn’t fulfill his destiny as the next great high school-to-pros player, he was still memorable for me. Also, his podcast with Richardson appropriately dubbed “Knuckleheads” is fantastic.
Why are they ranked here? It’s up to the Clippers to break the curse this week. They’re at New Orleans and at Phoenix to kick off the week. Winning 11 of their last 12 has put them up here for the time being, and they’re not even healthy yet. Would love to see the rest of the season be full strength for them.
