Meanwhile the photo in question shows one student with a clover on her shirt and many students wearing green in the background, suggesting it could have been around St. Patrick’s Day.
The students’ parents have filed a class-action lawsuit against the school, saying they will have to redo the entire semester and have been left $16,000 out of pocket
A party known as the ‘Blarney Blowout’ is typically thrown at the school during March.
Once the photo reached the attention of the school administration, the three students were initially suspended.
They were studying remotely, before UMass banned them from virtual learning and from taking their final exams.
Their parents argue this means they will have to redo the whole semester. Each semester costs $16,000 in fees – a fee the parents say the schools is refusing to refund.
The trio were also barred from applying for housing next year.
UMass has been accused of hypocrisy over its harsh stance on the students after it then hosted a big celebration when the men’s hockey team won the national championship in April.
Video from the school’s hockey team on Instagram shows a crowd gathering to interact with the players upon their return to campus.
‘The university hosted a parade/event to celebrate the UMass hockey team’s national championship win, violating every single one of violations they accuse these girls of,’ one of the parents said.
Meanwhile the strict punishment for the students’ attendance at the outdoor event comes despite the CDC saying outdoor transmission makes up less than 10 percent of cases.
